Big ticket items, luxury goods (like jewelry and toys) and non-consumable products are also marketed by MLM companies, but unless you have a passion for a particular product and enjoy retail sales, I recommend you steer clear of these programs. Most people simply don't enjoy selling so you lose 95% of your potential business builder market if you're doing a direct sales program. Finding people who can duplicate sales success is tough. You have to sell your idea to salespeople, and selling a salesman can be quite a challenge! It is better to stick with consumables with wide market appeal and focus on business building rather than product pushing. Find a product line that supports transfer buying, and you'll be ahead of the game.

Essential Element: A balanced compensation plan.

I've met more than a few people who didn't understand the pay plan of the company they were actively promoting. This is where the real "smoke and mirror" tactics become apparent. I always compare compensation plans as the first step in evaluating a company. If I was interviewing for a job, I'd want to know how much it paid before I accepted the position, wouldn't you?

If you don't know how the pay plan works or the requirements for getting a bonus check, you can't effectively or objectively compare companies. Would you start a traditional business without knowing if you could make money at it? Most people wouldn't, but these same people will join a network marketing program without understanding the mechanics of the pay plan.

A good pay plan allows the part-timer to quickly develop a positive cash flow while still rewarding the full-time career professional who builds a big business. And the products must be reasonably priced. This is a tricky balance that only a few companies ever achieve. This is the BIG DIFFERENCE between Cognigen and other companies in the network marketing industry. So people in the business are mostly in it for the money, and the products are overpriced to provide the extra money needed to pay commissions.
